Baby's Mixed Vegetables with Chicken (for 8 months onwards)

This baby food recipe is quite easy to prepare and is very versatile. Peel, dice, boil/simmer, put it in a blender or mash with a fork! Done. And the great thing is, babies love it. This has been a favorite recipe of my baby for months. Sometimes I omit the carrot. Sometimes I cook it without the chicken. Sometimes I cook it with tender pork or beef slices instead of chicken!

*Baby's Mixed Vegetables with Chicken

Ingredients:
Each vegetable should be diced about 1 cm per side
3/4 cup sweet potatoes
3/4 cup potatoes
3/4 cup sayote (chayote)
1/4 cup carrots
1/4 cup skinless chicken breast
2 cups water

In a pot, boil the water then add all the other ingredients putting the chicken on top. Simmer for 15 minutes. Get the chicken pieces on top together with the water then blend in a blender at power 1 for about 10 seconds then add in all the other vegetables. Stir. Blend in the blender at power 1 for another 5 seconds. Stir. Blend for another 5 seconds.

I just use a blender to make things easier but you don't really have to. Just slice the chicken breast across the grain as thin as you can (put it in the freezer for about 20 minutes before slicing to make it easier to slice thinly) before cooking. Then you can either use a potato masher or a fork to make the vegetable bits smaller.

If you will be using a blender or food processor, as much as possible use it exclusively for making baby food to avoid contamination. Clean it very well right after using so that it will be ready for next use. I'm an OC Mom so I put a cup of purified/distilled water at room temperature in the blender. Run it for 1 minute at power 1. Drain the water. Put another cup of boiling water then run it for another minute at power 1. Drain the water turning it around carefully making sure that all the sides of the blender had been "sterilized" by the very hot water. I don't know if it's just me. I just want to make sure no dish detergent is left in the blender and all the other possible dirt/germ or bacteria are removed. I can't think of any other way to sterilize the blender. That's the closest I can think of.

Well, babies need a little bacteria sometimes. That will boost their immune system but I'm so careful when they are very young babies. I don't want them to have colds and cough at a very young age.

Baby's Vegetable Duo (6 months onwards)

One of baby's first food! After trying sweet potato puree for a week, you can already try this recipe. We should introduce 1 vegetable per week so that it will be easy for us to identify which food our baby is allergic to.

This is a great combination. It's a bit sweet because of the sweet potato and/or squash. Babies also love the consistency. It's better than potato and sweet potato duo because sayote (chayote)has a different texture that prevents this baby food from sticking to the throat.

Ingredients:
(Each vegetable should be diced about 1 cm per side)
1 cup sweet potatoes or squash
1 cup sayote (chayote)
2 cups water

In a pot, boil the water then add the vegetables. Simmer for 15 minutes. Puree in a blender or food processor at power 1 for about 5 seconds. Stir. Run the blender for another 5 seconds or until it has reached the consistency you want. A potato masher, a fork or a sieve/strainer can also be used.

Baby's Vegetable Platter (6 months onwards)

As first baby food, try the single vegetable purees first, then the vegetable duo.

A potato masher, a fork or a sieve/strainer can also be used but at least a hand-held blender would be a great help.

Baby's Cheesy Macaroni (for 9 months onwards)

Baby's cheesy macaroni is one of my baby's favorite baby food. It's a complete meal in itself and it's so easy to prepare.

This yields 4 servings and can be refrigerated for up to two days in a clean fridge.
Ingredients:
100g salad macaroni or elbow macaroni
100g diced potatoes (about 1 cm on each side)
50g diced carrots (about 1 cm on each side)
50g shredded mild cheddar cheese (In the Philippines I use Kraft Cheddar Cheese. It's less salty than the other local brands and it really tastes cheesy :-)
2 cups water

Boil 2 cups water, then add the macaroni, potatoes and carrots. Simmer for 15-20 minutes stirring occassionally to prevent macaroni from sticking to the pot. Test macaroni's tenderness. Make sure it had already absorbed all the water it can absorb. You can add a little more boiled water if it's not so tender yet. Finally add in the cheese and stir. Let it cool for about half an hour before putting it in the fridge. Pour into 4 lidded containers. You have a meal for baby good enough for 2 days!

Baby food should be put in lidded containers containing 1 serving each.

From the fridge, I microwave it on high for 40 seconds.

Sweet potato puree ( 5 months onwards)

We can make certain adjustments to this baby food recipe by adding or decreasing the liquid depending on what our baby likes. (Please note that if you are exclusively breastfeeding and haven't tried feeding your baby formula milk yet, please do so before adding it to baby food. In my experience, my 2nd baby was not allergic to formula milk so I used formula milk instead of water in her baby food. With my third baby, she's having some rashes whenever I give her baby food. I found out that it's because of the formula milk and not any of the vegetables in her food. At 1 year of age, her allergy to formula milk is gone.)

Ingredients:
1 cup diced sweet potatoes (about 1 cm per side)
1 cup water or formula milk
extra water, breastmilk, or formula milk as needed

Boil the water then add the diced sweet potatoes. Simmer for 15 minutes. Puree in a blender or a food processor. You can puree manually using a potato masher or a sieve/strainer. Add previously boiled or purified water as needed to make the puree smoother when you're going to feed it already.
*Please take note that instead of water, you can add expressed breastmilk or formula milk just before serving so that the taste will be more familiar to your baby.
Always test baby food's temperature before giving them. Drop some baby food at the back of your hand. The food's temperature right at that moment should be just like our normal body temperature.
